About three weeks from Emmett’s due date, I was working from home praying for Emmett to come when he’s ready because I was so eager to have some time off from work to spend with my little guy. It was nearing the end of my work day when I went to go let the dogs out in the backyard and all of the sudden I felt a large amount of fluid trickling down my pants. Being a Registered Nurse, my first thought was that my water broke, but of course I was worried about looking like idiot if I just happened to somehow pee myself.
I immediately called my husband, Brett, to rush home from work because I thought we were going to have to go to the hospital. After speaking with my OBGYN office, sure enough, they wanted us to go in to the hospital to get checked out. I began to frantically pack all of our hospital bags, which I kept procrastinating on in the weeks leading up to now. Once we got checked in to the OB Triage Unit, they performed a swab test to confirm that the fluid was indeed amniotic fluid.
The nurse excitedly shouted “you’re having a baby tonight!”
Of course we were beyond excited to finally meet our little Emmett, but nerves quickly set in as we were so unprepared for his early arrival. Throughout the entire pregnancy, Brett and I were planning for a big baby because Brett was born at a whopping 10 pounds 8 ounces, so come to our suprise, we were about to have a small baby. After the doctor came in to talk to us about the plan for my labor, we were transferred to the Labor and Delivery side of the unit where Emmett would soon join the world.
