I want to start by saying that I was blessed to have a very healthy, normal pregnancy and delivery. I was lucky enough to not even have the dreadful morning sickness pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy! The worst thing that I dealt with at the end of my pregnancy was this random flare of eczema, called dyshidrotic eczema, where little blisters pop up all over your hands and feet that are so itchy you physically can't resist the urge to itch. It was definitely a challenge dealing with this during the last trimester, especially when paired with my extremely swollen feet.
Anyways, the point to me sharing all this is that there was nothing out of the ordinary, that Brett and I knew about, which would put Emmett's health in jeapordy.
My labor experience was super smooth as well, thanks to my body starting to go into labor all by itself. From the time that we were admitted to the OB Triage Unit to the time that Emmett was born was under 12 hours, which is not super common with first time deliveries. I also only had to push for 40 minutes total, which was amazing! I was a little bit worried about Emmett having some trouble breathing after birth, just because he was technically considered "premature", but to our relief that boy came out screaming.
Our sweet Emmett was born at 5:41am weighing 6 pounds 7 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches long. His APGAR scores were 9/9, which proved how amazing he was doing after joining the world.
The only complication that I had after delivering Emmett was that my uterus was "boggy", meaning it wasn't firming up like it should. Luckily, I didn't loose much blood, but I did have to get a few additional medications to help my uterus firm up.
A couple hours after Emmett was born, our Pediatrician came into our room to meet him and do a full head to toe assessment. He seemed to be doing a very thorough assessment, which included looking in Emmett's mouth. After he was done, he confirmed that we had a healthy baby boy! He did talk to us about the possibility of needing to supplement with formula if Emmett wasn't gaining a good amount of weight, but he encouraged us to try my breastmilk first to see how he does with it. Shortly after, we were transferred to the Postpartum Unit, where Brett and I would start our journey of parenthood.
